Waiting

This is an image that I have been after for many many years. Perhaps it's not perfect (I was trying to increase the ISO to bump the shutter speed but didn't have enough time), but it is head and shoulders above any other image I have captured of this species. I saw the bird on a telephone pole just above a watering hole and photographed it as the sunset - I was about to give up when the bird swooped down and hovered 10' above the water for what seemed like an eternity. Who knows how long it will be until I get a chance like this again but it's a reminder to everyone out there to never give up on your "nemesis" bird!

Nikon D7100 Nikon 300mm f4 + 1.7X TC HH from vehicle
f/8
1/1600s
ISO 800
Crop Mode

This is Full Frame + added canvas. It was shot in Crop Mode on the D7100 and I wanted more room above the wing tips, so I added what I needed and cropped to an 8X10 but basically it's "full frame"

Minor adjustments in LR5, canvas add (using canvas from next frame) in CS5

- Luke

Congrats on getting a full frame image of one of these and having it sharp. This is a nice shot and one that I have been after too. Looks a little warm but that is probably the sun. Nice job Luke.

Head-and-shoulders better than anything I've got on this difficult species as well. Congratulations!

nice, Luke--full frame +canvas! I've never gotten anywhere near that close to one of these and don't expect to anytime soon. way to stick with it and get the shot. maybe it's not perfect, but that just gives you something to go back for. :toast:

Worth the wait indeed !! Excellent. I,ve found the crop mode on the 7100 quite useful- especially with my 300mm.
Good stuff.

Sweet, Luke, and it's nice to hear your patience paid off. I'm still waiting on several "nemesis" birds!

Luke looks like you got it spot on! Flying birds are the next on my list if I can get one half as good as this I would be very pleased.

Fantastic image. This bird knows when you point the camera and moves at the last minute. :toast:

I would be delighted with this image Luke. They are not, in my opinion, easy to approach. Very skittish.

Great shot, Luke. Only thing I can think to improve it, would be to see if you could coax some more blue out on the bird, but the golden lighting may make that impossible. Sharon
