Sand and Snow #3

Another image of wind-swept sand and snow on a beach in Chicago along Lake Michigan.

I'm having a tough time with JPEG compression with this series. The RAW files show great detail in the grains of sand and fine texture in the snow. This is lost in the jpeg files, which look like a muddy mess. I tried Nik Sharpener Pro 3 with this image but I'm still not satisfied. Any suggestions?

Oh, and all three were processed in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2...

Jon, another lovely swirling beach abstract. I'm especially attracted to how sharp the ridge near the right looks and (of course) all of the swirling flow on the left. In looking at the larger version, I think that increasing the mid-tone contrast might add some "pop" to the swirls. I can see detailed texture in the larger version, but know from experience that at NPN sizes, you'll never get to dig into the details like you can on a high res monitor.

Jon, love everything about this, the large view is amazing, personally, I don't see any problem at all. Beautiful work.

Great textures and patterns in this Jon. Like your comp especially the ridge on the right. If you use PS try out Tony Kyper's Web sharpening Actions.I believe a lot of people here use them. Nice job on this.

The textures and flow in this is really cool. It reminds me of the sandstone here only colder and softer. Nice work on these abstracts,I've enjoyed them. I think just the move from 16 bit to 8 bit removes much of the subtle tones in b/w in particular. What are ya gonna do.

Another fine comp with excellent use of line. Looks a little crunchy in the large version. Might be compression or over sharpening. There are a couple of excellent tips for web sharpening if you just put that in the search of the site. I'm enjoying your unique looking series.

I've really been enjoying this series, even though I haven't had time to comment. I had to stop a minute on this one though because this is the most powerful image yet IMHO. This is fantastic Jon - absolutely amazing!

Excellent! It sure does bring to mind the sandstones of the southwest! Great patterns, tones and tension in the image.
