You Know It's Cold When

Cold is simply part of the winter season up here. But every once in a while, it seems to be colder for longer than usual and it's easy to get a little impatient with the weather (right now, it looks like this winter might turn into one of those  )

So then I drive around looking at all the animals (wild and domestic) who spend their entire lives outdoors, and really can't be too bothered by what amounts to "a short stint" of uncomfortable temperatures for us humans.

I've been maintaining (and adding to) a series of photos called "You Know It's Cold When" for the past few winters - this was one of the first in that series.

The temperature this day was around -30c (-22 F). ISO 400, 1/500 s @ f/9.0, +1EV, 100-400mm lens at 250mm.

Karen, everybody around here in eastern Nebraska have been complaining about the winter but so far we've been lucky compared to the Dakota's and north. Hang in there spring is on the way. :toast:

I was so excited this morning to wake up and see -3F on the thermometer, which we seldom have. That, however, is warm compare to what you guys are going through... Those guys are so cold they're turning blue! Nicely composed, with two of them looking up adds to the interest. And, a nice mix of tones against the bleak landscape.

Like the moose in Fairbanks, I just don't know how they survive those kind of temperatures for days, weeks or even months. This is a good photo for highlighting the cold of winter and nicely captured, Karen.

These cows do look cold with their frosty face masks and the softness due to the blowing snow adds nicely the the sense of cold. Well seen.

"You know it's cold when". . .your own breath creates a frosty face mask! Poor critters, but I guess they've learned to survive such conditions, as you noted. I like the frosty "O" formed around their nose and mouth, by the combination of grazing, their breath, and the temps. The blowing snow adds to the extreme cold feel of this image. Wow, -22F. . .that's cold!!

Great theme, great image Karen!
The steer look absolutely frigid, and the comp works very well with the two @ center looking at you..
I like the bit of fog/mist also, it adds nicely to your theme :toast:
