Fire in the Sky

Taken last winter in Elk Island Park. I was in the park trying to get some images of bison when the sun started to go down. It was one of the nicest sunsets I'd seen in a long time and I had to rush to find a suitable foreground. I thought this frozen pond with the dead trees made for an interesting contrast to the beauty in the sky and gave the image almost an ominous feel to it. Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Kind of a good news/bad news scene, Carey. Visually attractive with the warm, soft sunset in contrast with the cold snow and stark tree trunks but has a bad news story (at least in the short term). The exposure is excellent in this with good control of the bright sunset while still maintaining a realistic light level in the foreground snow plus very real colors. Overall, a very nice photo!

Good contrast of elements here, making for a very nice image.

My first thought was that the tree trunks look like they had been burned in a forest fire at one point. . .and that fiery sky sure helps reinforce that thought. The starkness of the trunks does make for a good contrast with the more lacey looking trees in the middle of the image, and the warm sky also makes a great contrast with the cold look of the snow. Lovely sunset picture and a lovely snow scene, Carey.

I like how the warm colors of the sunset sky contrast the cold, harsh winter bottom.
Nice job exposing this scene, this image makes a strong statement.
Well done, have a great new year Carey!:toast:

I agree with your assessment. The contrast between the lovely sky and the stark dead tree trunks is compelling. I visited Elk Island last summer and found it a challenging place for photography, you've done very well with this image.

Mark, you are correct about Elk Island NP being a challenging place for landscape photography. Like much of Alberta (east of the rockies) the scenery is not very acsetically pleasing but there is an abundance of wildlife there and given that it's only a half hour drive, I go there quite often in hopes of catching some shots of bison, elk or moose. That being said, we do get some amazing cloud formations and spectacular sunsets from time to time which can turn an otherwise mundane landscape into something quite appealing, so when mother nature provides the right conditions, gotta seize the opportunity. Most trips to EINP don't yield any images worth saving so I'm happy that on this occasion I came away with a few keepers. Thanks for commenting!

Very nice capture. Looks as though the dead trees are remains from forest fire.
Great exposure on snow and sunset. Well done :toast:
