Island In The Stream

This is another image from top of "Grenchenberg", a mountain in the Jura mountain of switzerland. In the winter time when the swiss main valley, called the "Mittelland" is often covered under a layer of fog in the higher areas of the Jura there is clear blue skies. Mountain "Grenchenberg" is just about 1400 meter above sea level, but there's enough snow in the winter for winter sports.....and there are also plenty of photography spots. This picture here was taken on a perfect morning when fog laid over the swiss main valley.......the hill that you see here is "Bettlachberg", a mountain just about 1000 meter above sea level. It was an awesome morning with unbelievable colors......

This is lovely, Roland. The ambiance set by the light is just fantastic.

Tiny nit -- my eye wants a tighter crop on the trees, so that they span the width of the frame.

Otherwise, fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, also, is the image's title a Hemingway reference?

Really does give a sense of flowing clouds. Nicely seen and composed.

I like the mystical feel of this Roland. The cloud color and the tree island are very nice-simple and to the point.

This is great. What a special island in a pink sky. I sure do like how the island of trees on the left seems to be floating in all that pink fluffyness.

Love the comp, Bill--but to be totally honest the pink is just too much for me personally here--probably cause there's no context where the sun is--it looks like the sun is up high enough to light up the cloud tops, but i usually only see pink like this when the sun is down..

Love the scene, but like Stan, the pink is not really working for me. I would love to see a version with it color balanced more neutral. It is a really excellent image.

Simply gorgeous. The warm light adds a new dimension to a scene ordinarily seen in blues.

I like every bit of this…
The pink color is fine with me, and comp is right on.

You've had some great work from this location, Bill and this is no exception. I like the color and mood here as well as the way that those trees are peeking out of the veil of fog. Splendid work!! :toast:

Fabulous moment. i'd consider playing around with the comp a bit (perhaps snipping a little off the top?). The colour washes over me but makes me a little nauseous. Muting that pink slightly would improve it for me, I think - but then I do work mostly in b&w so you should feel free to disregard anything I say about colour.

The way the trees are lost in the clouds is a nice effect. I too would reduce the pink a bit.

Don't you just love when the fog reduces everything to the basics? Sweet!

Thanks for your feedbacks. As always I appreciate it. About the pink color - I must say I desaturated/muted the pinks already a lot.....indeed it was even stronger. But smoehow I couldn't have it so intense. And yes, the photo was taken before sunrise - a couple of minutes before sunrise. We had clouds in the sky and fog below and on the eastern horizon there were clear skies. I have never witnesed such colors before.........so I will try a version with a bit more muted colors but I think finally I will keep it the way it is now.......but as I said before I appreciate your honest feedback and it made me think about the color aspect again in this image.

Great photo Bill! Would also have loved to see a really long exposure of this, with an ND filter.

Flat out awesome image, Bill. The mood and drama conveyed with the clouds is superb and I love the way the ridgeline is playing hide and seek with the viewer. BTW, the pink glow does not bother me a bit.

Incredible mood here Bill! I really like the colors and the "island" sticking up out of the fog. It doesn't get much better than this!
