‘Catfish Taxi II’
Loading gear in the boat for an evening outing when this guy swooped down and plucked this catfish out of the river not more than 30 feet from us. I managed to fire off a few shots as the event unfolded. All the manual camera settings were from earlier when shooting an Eagle fly by and were fortunately fairly close for this shot. Hand held from dock.
I felt this Image had potential so I spent far more time than usual to try and make something worth while out of it. I added canvas and cloned in the BG water in front and top eliminating the uneven shore line. The hardest part was getting the gaps between the feathers at the wing tips to have the correct appearance and cloning in the missing right wing tip. I did not straighten the way off angle of the capture because I felt the Osprey and Catfish had a nice flight path as captured. I did the standard sharpening drill to try and get better feather detail and finally realized (by the water droplets coming off the pair that I did manage to bring out) that the Osprey was soaking wet from just coming out of the river and there was no feather detail as they were all matted down and wet. I backed up and did some select sharpening and select color saturation on the Osprey’s legs and the catfish for better detail. I also lightened up the shadows a bit and this was the results. The biggest thing I learned from the time I spent on this image is what a fine line there is between just enough and too much during post processing. Thanks to Mark for this challenge, it is a good learning experience to participate in and very educational for me to see and experience the creative thinking of others and their outstanding work.

Very nice result of your post-processing Mike. His eye is sharp, with pretty good detail all around, and like what you did with the composition. Sometimes the extra effort and time really pays off. I've only seen something like this happen once while paddling. Off in the distance I actually thought something had grabbed an osprey, because he was struggling to fly out from the water. After several seconds had passed, he began to gain altitude, with a big fish in his claws. Had a P&S camera at the time, with little focal reach.

Great shot Mike - I love photographing ospreys and this is the biggest fish I have seen one with yet! Interesting how they always turn the head of the fish into the wind. Something I learned about them the other day that I was not aware of is that they have barbs on the bottoms of their feet to enhance the fish holding process.

Very nice final image, Mike! Being able to capture this unique moment and turn it into a great image was well worth all your effort IMO. Your final image has a good comp, unobtrusive background, nice details, and fantastic subject matter. Great job!

Wow, what a processing adventure, Mike! The results are terrific, hard to see the final version in the original image. There's a great lesson in "vision" here.
