Vinca with water drops

I was testing the sprinkler system in my Florida front yard and on completion, I noticed the drops of water on the petals of these Vinca flowers. I grabbed my T3i with kit 18-55mm lens and shot this photo at 55mm.

Sandy - Welcome to the Flora Gallery.

Vinca Flowers with water drops have caught my imagination too - Old Photo. They look fascinating.

I like what you have captured here. A couple of observations : 1) Try to use a diffuser to cut direct sunlight to get more even lighting and saturated colors. 2) I would have tried to straighten the petal showing its underside now. Its a wee bit distracting in the frame.

Ram, thanks for the welcome. This was one of these "quickly grab the camera and shoot" type of things. I really had no time to give any thought to the shot - just wanted to capture the water. I appreciate the comments - trying hard to learn as a newbie of only 5 months with a DSLR and mostly doing bird photography. Great point on that bottom petal. I would not even have thought of that and comments like yours is what gets a newbie starting to think like a real photographer!

Miro: Thanks so much!!

Sandy: Welcome to NPN and to the finest Flora gallery on the planet. This is a good first post. I like your subject and your DOF management especially. I don't mind the reversed petal all that much; in fact its growing on me a little. On my monitor this looks a touch soft and could probably use a wee bit more sharpening. Another tip for shooting outdoors in bright lighting is to use a polarizer,an often overlooked filter for flora photography. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more. >=))> :wavey: :wavey:

Thanks so much Bill. I appreciate the tips! I also thought the shot was a bit soft. I now have a Canon f2.8L Macro lens and hope to get better results than I got with a quick snapshot using my 55mm kit lens that came with my T3i. Also upgraded to a 70D so with a bit of practice, I hope to generate something worthy of the forum!
