Snowy Bryce Sunrise

It was a frigid Monday morning at Bryce Canyon with a bitter wind chill, but I loved being there (first time with snow). I've struggled making a panorama of Bryce Canyon that I really liked, but I'm happier with this one than with previous attempts. C&C always appreciated - thanks for looking!

Nice use of the light in this photo. Your struggles paid off in this image. Would like to see your specs.

Hi Jared,

This is a beautiful scene, and must have been a great place to be. I especially like the golden glow that the sunlight creates in the left third of the frame. If it were mine, I might dodge the shadows on the left to see how they come out. Overall, this is a nice image.

Quite an impressive view you have captured here. The light is beautiful. The tree on the left is a bit distracting, or rather that chunk of snow which blocks the view and comes into that nice glow on the horizon. But I don't think it is a deal breaker. I certainly enjoy it.

That is a beautiful scene, Jared. I really like the light and early morning glow you captured. It does look like it would have been cold even with that morning sun because it has that clear and crisp look. Very nice!

Wonderful feel to this Jared. Can feel the crisp cold air. Nice colors and light in the scene. I find the lump of snow a bit distracting but not a deal breaker. Great job here.

Very nice pano, Jared. I agree with Didi about the chunk of snow in the tree. I like the bright light.

This scene is classic Bryce. I like the pano format and rays of light. I do wish the clump of snow on the tree was not so heavy. I understand everything is a compromise and it helps to tell the story of heavy winter snows but for me it clashes with the feeling of lightness everywhere else in the image.

Superb image, Jared! Great use of light and the tree to block the sun. The pano works perfect for this. :toast:

Great view for sure, Jared. While you can tell it is cold the warm sunrise light makes the image very inviting. The clump of snow kind of reminds me of a bear climbing a tree.

For everyone else, it aint a deal breaker. I guess im just the bad guy, but ill just go right ahead and say, its a deal breaker. If you were buying a car that you really loved the look and feel of, but then you found out the underside was rusty, it would be a deal breaker. So it is with photos. But that's ok, unlike the car your photography can move along pretty quickly. I do love the scene here, the snow and light are quite pretty. I even like the sunstar. The snow clump is just too blocky and distracting. Comp trumps all in the end. :wavey:

Thanks for the comments and feedback! Ralph, this pano was stitched together from 3 images horizontally, each f/22, 1/25 sec, 28mm, ISO 100, except the left-most image (with the tree) was itself a 2-image blend for DOF. Various processing refinements in Lightroom, plus (I should have said this before to get specific feedback on it) my very first attempt using an "Orton effect" in Photoshop, but I intentionally tried to keep that pretty subtle.

I also want to say I really appreciate the helpful feedback that happens here on NPN. In the case of this image, some not minding the clump of snow on the tree, and for others it being a dealbreaker. It always feels nice to get the pats on the back, but if that's all I wanted I'd spend more time on 500px. Thanks!
