Gooseberry Falls + B&W

This is a picture I made at Gooseberry Falls on the north shore of Lake Superior late in Sept. It was early in the morning and no other photographers around yet, but I knew they would come before long. The water flow was pretty low so you could get to places that you would have a hard time getting to with more flow. I enjoyed hiking around and looking for new comps. Thanks for looking and for all of your comments on my last post. Larger version included.

Very well composed, Nick. I like your choice of shutter speed, and the little cascades at the bottom are a nice lead out for the overall comp. Well done !

Nice composition. The high contrast B&W rendering works really well for this.

I think you've captured the essence of these falls, Nick. Striking and strong image. I really like the strong contrast between the dark rocks and the water. Sounds like you enjoyed your time there, and it shows.

I've been enjoying your posts Nick, but for me this is even another step up. I love the comp, and the dark background perfecting the white water flow in front is enchanting. I love the way it's "almost" a black and white.

Man, Nick, this is stunning. You have distilled the essence of these falls into its elemental essentials of pure falling water and dark, textural rock. The almost 'black and white in color' really adds to this, as does your exquisite composition. Can't get over the sheen and texture, the deep color and shadows in the rock. Your chosen shutter speed was just perfect for these falls. Sure glad you had the place to your self for a while as you were able to find the perfect composition and make one amazing image.

Thanks much guys! I sure appreciate your comments. That is the color version but I do have a b&w version that I already did. I was going to post it first but decided on the color. I'll add the B&W one here for comparison. Thanks, Nick

Stunning capture here, Nick. I could add a long comment string on this image, but I could not do it justice I'm afraid. Just a wonderful capture all around.... :toast:

btw: just saw the b&w, I prefer the color version better, both are excellent.

Very well scene and composed. I was looking twice thinking there was some color in this one. I prefer the b +w but really nice either way!

I like the "steely" quality in the almost B/W version Nick. It's heavy and strong. The pure monochrome ain't bad either! Very nicely done in both cases.

I really like both, but I think the B&W is my favorite of the two. You can't go wrong with either, though.

Beautiful waterfall portrait Nick. The shutterspeed is just perfect! I like both as well, but the B&W takes it!

Thanks for your comments! I like both versions but probably like the color a little better. It was so enjoyable shooting here on this morning. Even though I have shot here a few times I will probably remember this morning the most, at least so far! Thanks, Nick

Tough call for different reasons, but the BW is my favorite of the two.
Both are quite nice NB :toast:

Both versions are beautifully done, Nick. The low water flow certainly worked to your advantage. Your SS choice is perfect and I like the little section of falls in thee ULC.

Really great job here Nick. Really like your comp. and the water flow is perfect. It has a very sombre mood that I like also. I like waterfalls images and this is a beauty. :toast:

The B&W really pops for me. Wish there was a little more breathing room at the top to balance the bottom. SHutter speed perfect.

Wonderful image Nick! I like the color version better though it's close, and my only suggestion is to darken the rocks on either side of the small cascade at the bottom center of the image, as I believe this improves the composition and flow.

Exquisite image Nick. Love the silky motion of the water and glistening rocks. In this case, I prefer the color version but the B&W is also very good.

Saw that you posted a b/w version, Nick. Its pretty incredible as well but I still think the color version is one of the most beautiful and captivating waterfall images I have seen in a long, long time. A large print of this will be a stunning.

David and Vance, Thanks guys!
Vance, I just did a print of the color version of this tonight and I like it very much. I only printed it on 17 x 22 paper but will try a larger one soon. Thanks so much! Nick

Fascinating comparison, Nick. In looking at the original, my first thought was that going to b&w wouldn't change much....boy was I wrong! I really like the original "black & blue" version best. All of the soft water action and the small steps in the rocks are wonderful and the tiny "repeated version" in the urc is a neat addition. Well seen.

Hi Nick,

Being a Minnesotan myself, I have visited Gooseberry Falls many times. You have captured the scene well.

Thank you Mark and Randy!
Mark, I thought the difference was interesting too. Kind of cool seeing both versions and I like the original color version best too, even thought it is close for me.
Randy, Gooseberry Falls is a pretty cool place, and especially if one can be there when it is not overrun with people. Maybe I will see you there one of these times early in the morning! Thanks, Nick

nice work - comp and shutter speed working perfectly here. I'd be inclined to de-saturate the colour out of this as, perhaps oddly, i find it distracting.

EDIT - just seen the b&w version - spot on!
