Maple Twist

Fall colors at the famous Japanese Maple in the Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, OR.

The leaves were falling off the tree rapidly this morning and will probably all be down in the next few days. The one good thing about the falling leaves is that they create a nice carpet of color beneath the tree.

Nikon D800, Nikkor 16-35mm, polarizer
4 image blend for DOF
4 sec at f/16, ISO 100 x4

This is an amazing tree, and a wonderful shot of it. Great comp making such nice use of the shapes. The color and detail just doesn't get better imo. Beautiful! Bright area on the top center edge just a slight distraction...almost didn't mention it...

That's the first thing I noticed Scott, haven't seen a shot of "the tree" with the ground carpeted like that. Ditto about the bright spot, but that's minor, and an easy fix. Nice capture!

Very nice as is but if it were mine to play with I think I'd up the luminance on the orange/red to make it a tad brighter/lighter. It seems a bit dark. This needs to be printed big and on metal or metallic paper. :toast:

Very graphic image ,especially with the darker limbs. I might darken that small patch of sky on the upper boarder, as already mentioned. Pretty amazing color of that tree. I assume that this is pretty close to the actual colors?

Beautiful image, Scott!! Love the comp utilizing the fallen leaves! Color is mind blowing… for me, anyway, as we don't have fall colors here. : )

I wonder if this is the most photographed tree in the world?

Great color and DOF blend work.

I would like to see more of the tree or ground with a little panoramic work, but it is nice as is.

Thanks for sharing, Scott!

Wonderful shapes in tree. Just wonder if a little less saturation in the light green esp might enhance.

Hi Scott
This is beautiful, the contrasts of orange and greens are complimentary with this scene. I would suggest opening the shadows a bit more. Where it seems really problematic for me is with the bush to the left of the main tree trunk. That just seems like a bit of a black hole that pulls my attention. I don't mind the dark branch line of the smaller distant branches, but think the three larger main branches would benefit from more detail and light. Just a thought.

Very nice overall though.

I have to put a visit to this garden on my bucket list. This is flat out superb, Scott. I love the subdued light; perfect for showcasing the character of the maple along with the glorious autumn color. The carpet of leaves on the ground is just another element to savor and enjoy here. I too would crop out that little bit of sky at the top.

A glorious riot of color. And the greens support the oranges and red perfectly. I'm with Ed on a crop to remove the sky. A calendar shot if ever there was one. :toast:
