I'm following Marks footsteps and posting a recent shot from Smith Rock. I attempted a sunset and sunrise here but never got the kind of light that Mark did! For the sunrise, the forecast was for mostly clear, so I decided to give this type of vantage point a go. I will admit to being influenced by Floris' shot of this place from above, but he worked a lot harder for his shot, as I think he rock climbed up to his vantage point! I just took the 1 mile trail up to the top of the rocks.

Once up there, I went out to the furthest point, and while leaning out as far as a could and stretching my arm out over the edge as far as it would, I would snap, snap, snap... and then review the images to see if I got the comp right, handheld without looking. Also shot these at 14 mm, so there was some massive distortion, which took many many hours to correct in post. It's still a little odd I think, but it works for me. I get the sense of how it felt to be standing up there looking down on this amazing landscape.
Disclosure, I did remove some of the trails that run through this place(there are MANY).

Creative thinking.....
I don't adhere to the idea that we have to have nuclear sunsets/sunrises to produce great work as this proves right here. Keep up the always great and inspiring work!
Now about your icon??? Until, I learned otherwise, that icon made me think you might be a 19 year old, back woods, Oregon hillbilly! LOL! I dont know but maybe a better representation of yourself might be at hand? Sorry. :) :) :)
Dan, I know what you mean about the CW rotation. Unfortunately, I've messed with the distortion of this image so much that I'm afraid to move it anymore. I can't just rotate it because that will result in a crop that I don't think the image can afford. It was just such an odd vantage point. The horizon is straight, so it's mostly an optical illusion.
My fav Smith Rock is still the version Marc A and i came up with a few years back (scroll 2/3 down)
