WC602 - Foggy Fishing

Another commercial fishing photo from Valdez, Alaska. In this one the hook has been closed up at the boat, the bottom of the seine has been pursed. Rings hang on the bottom of the web with a rope through them and one end of the rope is gather in until the rings come together, thus closing (pursing) the bottom of the seine to capture the fish. Here they are performing the next step which is to gradually bring one end of the seine back up onto the boat until the "purse" is very small and contains the mass of salmon. Waited patiently, once again for the boat in the background to move into the right place to balance the composition and provide depth.

I really like this capture, Gary. I think this would be my favorite of the group so far. I find this isolation of the two boats and their positioning a very solid composition.

I might play with the brightness and contrast very slightly, but not so much to lose the feeling of the foggy look overall.

This is terrific, Gary. Having only two boats really simplifies the scene and seeing all of the nets of the front boat does such a good job of establishing context. The small bits of color really pop in what is otherwise a very monochromatic scene.

Love the story this tells. I would echo Paul's comments about this being my favorite in the series, with a strong composition. Waiting for the boat in the background worked out well.

Another great Valdez shot! I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite as they all are special in their own way. I do like the simple but effective comp in this one with lots of empty space--adds to the feeling of isolation. I also like seeing the complete net and boat in this view. Again, the colors pop nicely from the mostly hazy and monchromatic setting. My only thought would be to take a pass or two with the saturation brush over the boat to help accent it a bit more. Thanks for this interesting and educational series of images from Valdez, Gary!
