Gothic

From a trip to the Crested Butte area back in July. I had heard this area has epic wildflowers, and I have some images that substantiate the notion. But as I was headed back to town down Gothic Road I turned around and caught this scene. Exploring Colorado is one revelation after another of quite amazing places often covered in light to match. Hope I was able to do it justice, at least to some degree.

Love the mood and the dark greens.
I have never seen a sky look so black and white. Amazing capture.

Pretty scene with great color in the mountain. The thin line of snow on the mountain top really catches my eye. In the small version, I thought it looked like a bad halo line.

Is the sky B&W due to editing? It doesn't look natural to me.

Thanks guys. Your comments reflect the same things I found unique and intriguing about this image. The snow ridge was something I originally found annoying, but it's real and larger versions make that apparent, so later saw it as adding interest. The sky is the most unusual element. It had rained pretty hard for quite awhile that afternoon. As the sun set the light was flat and monochromatic. The only treatment to that area of this image is a grad ND in Lightroom to add contrast and bring down the highlights, but after doing that it was totally B/W, so I added a tiny touch of warm tint to the filter because I couldn't believe what I was seeing either. I got up the next morning expecting a colorful sunrise and it was the same experience. No color.

I used to live close to the Sierra and clouds almost always meant a color show, sunrise or sunset. That can happen with unbelievable drama here, but also a new phenomena of dark, monochromatic skies - and I have yet to predict which will happen.

Beautiful capture, looks like a painting. I can't decide if the contrast between the rich greens and the b/w sky is a plus or a minus. It's unusual, for sure and I like that.

At the risk of TMI, the yellow glow in the FG and on the hillsides is from a carpet of wildflowers. The title seemed to match the mood, but was actually a reference to the location.

Wow! Nice comp, and I love the slightly dark, rich mood.

Beautiful image Russ with wonderful greens and yellows and I like the comp. I'm not sure whether I like the sky or not but very unusual just the same. Very nice image.

Interesting, Russ. The scene is pretty intense. I am having trouble reconciling the sky with rest of the image, though. I am wondering what effect reducing the saturation in the yellows would have? The cornice remnant along the ridgeline doesn't bother me at all. I love all the detail in the moody sky.

There is a nice flow to all of the elements in the frame. I cannot resolve the rich saturation of the land and the lack of any color in the sky.

Very intriguing, both composition and colors. I thought it was selective desaturation, and it does force the mind to try to reconcile. I guess the question is whether that's what you want the viewer to do.

Very nice shot. :toast:

My two cents are kill the halo, and maybe go with a more natural sky color. Still cool though.
