Svartisen Glacier
by Chris Stenger
The picture shows a tongue of the Svartisen Glacier in Northern Norway. The glacier has retreated a lot in the past few years leaving behind bare rocks with the fascinating patterns you see in the picture. The image is a vertical stitch of two images made with a tilt-shift lens.

Harry, to be honest, I didn't notice the funky colours in the sky, but you are right, under carreful inspection I can see some strange things in the sky. It's an artefact of the jpeg compression. In the original file, a print and the non-compressed low res file the sky is perfectly grey without the greens and magenta's. These colours develop during jpeg compression of the low res file. I had to use a fairly strong jpeg compression at level 7 to reduce the file size of the 1200 px image to below the NPN allowable 500 kb. Apparently this fairly strong compression leads to some artefacts in the sky.
