Timeless Blue

A few days ago I stumbled upon this shot from 2011 that I had initially started processing but then forgot about. I remember liking the shot a lot, but due to extensive noise I didn't really bother. This time I took a closer look at the noise (high temperature noise, random hot pixels - nothing that standard noise reduction handles very well) and decided to give it another try. In the end it turned out to be an easy fix: used duplicates of the original layer applied noise reduction and median filter and blended the result with darken blending mode. The resulting file is more or less noise free and thanks to the blending almost no detail got lost.

I have been thinking about an 1x1 or otherwise more squareish crop, but decided to stick with 3x2 - what do you think?

Jeffrey's Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Canon 5DMKII, EF 17-40 @ 17mm, GND, Lee Big Stopper
ISO 100, f/11, 331 seconds
single exposure processed in LR + PS

cheers,
joerg

A Very Interesting image, makes me feel I am being drawn into the Abyss

I agree, either crop would work, if you crop the bottom, it would make it 50/50.

I like it the way it is

Great color here, Joerg. The water looks like dry ice vapor all over the scene. The sky is amazing too and really adds to this fine capture and overall processing.
I do also like the idea of at least some crop off the bottom area.

An otherworldly look to this one. Very cool. Although there seems to be some splotchyness in the clouds. Probably easy to smooth that out.

Very surreal. The color adds to that surreal look. I see the face of a wolf in the LRC.

I love the way you saved the image. I don't see any noise. It is a bit cyan, but that is probably a personal taste- but I wonder if it would compliment the pinks better if the cyan had more of a magenta shift? Great scene!

Joerg, I'm enjoy the surreal mood of this and these colors really emphasize that. Very cool looking. This comp works quite nice I think.

I think both crops work well, I wouldn't know which one to prefer. But this is fantastic, and I like your noise reduction. I might have a go at one or two of my pictures. Thanks for sharing the info!

I love this. Wonderful mood, light, and execution. I like the thought of cropping part of the bottom, and just a little off the top, leaving the horizon at roughly 2/3 or 3/5 of the way up. Really nice work.

I wouldn't change a thing. I love as it is. Very mystic and ethereal.
