RIVERS EDGE+RP

Well, it has been a while since I posted or commented on any images here! I have been busy with all sorts of things going on, plus my membership expired!

I am finally finding some time to catch up with processing images from last November and December 2012!!

Just before Christmas 2012 I was in the Canadian Rockies giving Marc a hand with his winter Banff/Jasper Tour. Having a Land Rover comes in handy once in a while to shuttle photographers around in winter conditions

On one of the morning river shoots, I could not find any compositions that interested me. So I left the group and headed up river. While I was working my way up the river, the sun had risen and was now back lighting the mountain range, and created some nice light beams. I then started to move quickly, and finally came to a small channel where I had to play "Twister" to get this perspective. The channel was 16" wide, and the river was wider, so I was very concerned with falling through the ice !!

Being that the mountains were backed lit, it appears that a halo is present, but I did my best to control it. I am also thinking of a small crop on the bottom??

I took so long with this shot, and travelled quite aways up river, the group thought I fell through the ice!!

Any comments are always appreciated..

James, This looks great! The cool blue mood is fantastic! Nice work! Glad you didn't fall through the ice...I know the feeling of doing so!

A nice classic comp and I like the light. You are right: there is indeed a halo.

Great image. I like the composition with the river leading you into the image. I would definitively never crop the bottom. You might cider cropping the top a bit. Makes the image more balanced in my view, with more emphasis on the river .

I would have been terrified on that ice...for sure. Sick shot...love it. Interesting decision with the wb....artist choice. Bet this in b/w would be sick too. Well done!

Thank you for all the suggestions

I have made some more adjustments to get the natural halo under control, and also agree that a small crop off the top made the image more focused.

Wonderful composition James. I love the icy blue feel of the photo, it conveys a sense of coldness very well. I also love how the water in the FG looks like shimmering metal.

Lovely shot James. I prefer the original with more of that great sky light. I don't feel the need to crop it anywhere. Love the blue toning and your comp.

Thanks for the comments everyone

David, I agree with you as well. I am on the fence about this crop. The light up in those clouds is worth keeping, but at the same time competes with the muti-textured foreground. It is a bit of a "tug of war"

Wonderful image James. Great tones and comp and I like it without the crop the best. The sky is just great. Beautifully done image. :toast:

James - I find the sky and water sections of the image to be fine and engaging. To be super picky, the mid ground trees seem to get blocked up, as is often the case in winter when there is no snow on them. Maybe a BW conversion would allow them to stand out more and be in keeping with the rest of the photo. Ideally a return when trees were snow covered to help reflect mor light and have that winter wonderland effect we all strive to get. Not always possible, I realize.

Harry,

Yes I completely agree, the snow was just not on these tress like my other image
I did a brief B&W conversion, but it loses it punch compared to the blue tones ...

There is some morning mist behind those trees, maybe I can bring the trees out more by working on that area.

Thanks

Wonderful shot James, personally my first thought was that a crop from the top was what was in order, and I think you nailed it with the second post. It just works better for me, gorgeous shot.
