Hooked

Or at least tangled. I was photographing a family of Ospreys last Friday and when I processed the images I noticed the fishing swivel dangling from this adult's feet in all the flight shots. I don't know how functional the bird is-the other one was doing all the fishing in the time I watched, but this one was able to get around the nest, fly and perch in a tree. Unfortunately, that line could get tangled with nest material at any time.

1Div, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, handheld. F8, 1/1600, iso 400, manual exposure (I had to brighten it a bit in ACR, but I wanted to avoid blowing the whites in the field). Processed in CS6 and cropped to 6.2MP. Taken Friday, July 26th at 9:46 am.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

One can clearly see the fishing leader hanging there in the LP Dennis, happens much too often.
Great image! :toast:

Great capture, Dennis - awesome head-turn; not so great circumstance for the Osprey. Congrats on the weekly pic; I only wish the circumstances bringing about posts to the EPJ gallery wouldn't exist - I suppose we can aways dream.

Hi Dennis,
I hope you alerted the local wildlife authorities. Here in Massachusetts, the Audubon Society does a great job looking out for osprey. I am hoping that there is either a government agency or an Audubon chapter out in Washington that would be willing to try to help. It is worth a couple of calls.
