Hills' Forms

A few more from the John Day Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument, Painted Hills, to round out the series. This is one about form and texture, and of course, the color.

Panasonic Lumix GH3, G Vario 100-300, tripod, cpl; f9, 1/200, ISO 400.

Thanks for enjoying my sojourn through the hills with me. Comments welcome.

I like the sense of depth the overlapping land masses provide Catherine. I also like the rich earth tones.

Very nice earth tones and depth to this Catherine. Very nice comp also. Well done.

This must have been a fun place to shoot. You certainly came away with some winners. This one is not my favorite but I still like it for the wonderful fg texture and richly colored shapes in the bg. Nice work

A nice layered comp and your dof exploits the texture in the foreground, but allow the colored forms in the background to come through. Nicely done.

Excellent play on the depth of the scene, Catherine. The color, tone, textures, along with the overlapping mounds makes this one work very well.
Just a swag idea here, I wonder what it might look like with a slight crop from the right. Basically taking the crop to the point where the two FG mounds intersect. Just a thought. Regardless, works just fine as it's presented here.

Interesting composition, Catherine. The extreme perspective definitely emphasizes the texture and contrasts nicely with the OOF background. This works well as an abstract image.

I really like the three distinct layers here a lot. As you say, the shot is all about the textures and form here--given that, why not focus blend so it really is all about that? As it stands, the DOF makes the shot more 'realistic' in the sense that one wouldn't be able to take in all that depth in focus, but that seems contrary to your stated goal. Just a thought
EDIT: i just read the previous comment--and i see what he is saying, but i disagree with it--IMO, the bg should be in focus, it's the most important part of the comp because it has the strongest lines, if i were going to have anything soft it would be the fg layer here.

I like the lines, layers, and colors a lot! Kind of hard to say about what layers if any to focus and blur. I think I'd have to agree with Stan. The background layers lines and colors are better to my aesthetic taste than the front one.

The more of these great captures you post the more I wish I had made the journey to Painted Hills when I was on Oregon.
Nice shapes :wavey:
