Hummer

I chose this specific flower for the compositional options. Lured the hummer in with nectar in the flower I wanted. This was the result. A touch of ghosting in the wings, but I'm fine with that.

Canon 50D
100-400@235mm
1/250 @ f/18

4 flashes, 3 on the hummer / flower, one on the background

Larger version included.

Thanks for taking a look

Wow! Colors and comp rock on this one! Very nice! How do you get the nectar to stay in the flower? Sharon

Came back to look at this again and I have another question. Why is the ghosting only showing on the rear wing?....different speed???
Such a gorgeous image...I keep coming back to see it! Sharon

Very pretty indeed Keith. Composition is wonderful.

There seems to be noticeable change of tone running vertically down the wings almost directly where the bird's beak enter's the flower. Is this a shadow from the flash?

Love the shot. The flower makes it. It draws your eye to the bird and the colors are spectacular.

Beautiful job, Keith. How do you add nectar to the flower-just eyedropper some sugar water?

How do you get the nectar to stay in the flower?

The nectar runs out of the flower when it is at this angle. There is still enough residual that the hummers will go there and drink the remaining.

How do you add nectar to the flower-just eyedropper some sugar water?

I just use a small syringe to put a little nectar (4 parts water to 1 part sugar) into the flower.
