the woods.... this is literally over the river and through the woods from my last image. Happy Isles, Yosemite. While Yosemite Valley is my favorite place in general, Happy Isles is a wonderful little area we usually spend the better part of a morning at.

Oh, and thank you very much for your comments and preferences on my last post.

All the images so far have included water, so this is a break from that. After the time along the river, I wondered back through the woods and spotted this dogwood off in the distance. I used my large format zoom lens to compose the scene. A zoom lens you ask? Yeah, I used my legs to maneuver close to the tree and scene so I could use my 300mm lens. that's how we "zoom" with the 4x5.

Afterwards, I was wishing the dogwood had more blooms, but I still like the overall forest scene with the granite boulders, the fallen tree, etc. The sun had begun to creep in to the scene before I was able to expose the film, so there is a bit of cloning in the back UR canopy and trees. Hope it looks ok.

Your thoughts and critiques on this simple scene much appreciated.

4x5, Nikkor 300mm, V50, f/32 @3s

Thanks!
Lon

What a beautiful little scene, Lon. I really like how it conveys the feel of the woods, such as they are in Yosemite valley. I might be tempted to pull down the blues a bit, but minor. Real enjoyable image.

Very nice, Lon, great peaceful setting. I agree with Harley on a slight warm up.
As an aside, it's nice to be back here on NPN where I can comment honestly without feeling like im Frankenstein's monster--ive been setting up on G+ and all the 'wow' comments for photogs on that site are really starting to make me vomit...

One more for maybe a slight warm-up and maybe a slight brightening, but honestly that's reaching. This is practically perfect, Lon. A work of art. :toast:

This works great Lon, and the dogwood is wonderful even with a modest amount of blossoms. It's easy to conclude after viewing your work that these sorts of scenes are easy to find throughout the Valley. But that's far from the case and you have a real knack (plus years of experience on location) for finding special places in the Valley at the right moment.

Lon,

This a nice image of a woodland scene. I like to brightness of the level, but I would try to bring up the brightness of the Dogwood blooms to make them pop a bit.

I like the boulders a lot, they add a little extra spice to the "dogwoods against the forest green" theme. Lovely composition and mood. You make this look like a serene and secret place.

Thanks for the comments and feedback so far. Good call on the blue and warming this up. Here's a rework and I also slightly lightened things a bit. We all go through it - work on an image, make corrections like color casts and color balance, but after a while you think you've got it just right, but in reality you just can see the changes any more. Another reason feedback is so valuable.

Thanks!

Perfecrt comp. I keep looking around at the detail and never once am I thrown out of the scene. I so want to be there, not in this office writing SharePoint code.

And, if you ever stop shooting LF we'll firebomb your toolshed.

I like this one a lot, Lon. Lots of good elements in a very cohesive arrangement, anchored by the boulders. Well seen/taken. This would make a very nice print, IMO. I do prefer the tones of the repost. :toast:

Your repost works best for me Lon. Love the delicate dogwood blooms an contrast with the dark boulders and background forest.

Very pretty Lon. Really needs tyo be seen large to be fully appreciated. Repost is definitely better. My only nit is it feels a bit tight on top.

I like the rocks in the foreground, the log coming in from the left, and especially the dogwood with it's blooms. This reminds me of some of "Saint Ansel's" images with it's careful look at the details. I could see just a bit more space at the top, feels crowded up there. The repost has a nice warmth to it.

Quite a busy scene, but I love the subtlety of the light. I do prefer the warmed up repost. Nice one Lon!

Lon, I like the warmed up and lightened version better as well. This is really quite an interesting scene which I enjoy very much. It is busy but I'm impressed with how I still get drawn in to this scene and just want to explore it, especially looking at the larger version.

Not sure that I prefer the repost over the original. Pity we don't see so many quietly beautiful scenes like this in landscape photography today.

Either version is great with me. The dogwood makes this image come alive.
