Orion over the Dunes

While I was out photographing the full moon one evening as it rose over the ocean, I turned around and noticed that it was lighting up the dunes behind me. I exposed a single shot to bring out the stars and lined it up with Orion over the dip in the dunes. It looked as if I had light painted the dunes, but it was just the moon.

Very cool night sky capture, Kate! The dunes at the bottom are just visible enough to anchor the viewer to the earth. . .but that sky is just majestic! Amazing all the stars that are visible. . .unfortunately, many of us are near too much light pollution to see this many stars very often. The moon did a great job of lighting up those dunes for you. Good entry for the challenge.

Nice photo, Kate. I always look at the star photos to see if I can recognize any constellations. Usually no but happy to see Orion in yours. Your capture has enough detail that you can even see the great Orion nebula. It's around the middle star in the sword. Glad you kept the shutter speed quick enough to get reasonably sharp stars. Good effort.

Kate, I really like the composition here with the "W" shaped foreground against the lovely night sky. The warm colors on the ground contrast nicely with the blues in the sky.

Lovely sky and star field, nicely anchored by the dip in the dunes. To me, the dunes don't look painted in...they're pretty dark and contrasty. I'm always fascinated by how hard it is to pick out constellations in a good night sky photo, the camera picks up so many more stars and compresses the brightness. I clearly see his sword, but finding the rest is much more challenging.
