Assuming this is full frame you did well getting close. Finding the heron on an open branch is also good. Overall I like the setting.

I"d prefer more room for the feet - it feels cramped so close to the bottom of the frame and with the toenails clipped. I'd trade off space from the top for more at the bottom.

I'd crop out the bright leaf from the right side of the image - being so light it draws the eye away from the subject and takes it out of the frame.

It is hard to judge overall image quality at this small size - a larger 1200 px image would help with that. Exposure looks good but sharpness could be better (this might just need a bit more unsharp mask applied).

Thank you Richard, other than resizing this image is straight from the camera. I am trying to learn and everything you pointed out led me to look deeper into my image and I concur with the critiques....thanks again.

I will agree with Richard. I also think the bird is way washed out looking.

Nice image of this small and oftentimes elusive species, Agree with Rich about the bright leaf at the right edge. Would be nice for a bit of head turn, but good image all the same.

Detail looks reasonable at this scale, Joel. I like the foliage in the bg and you have a nice composition.

Joel,
A nice looking bird in a good open position, I would have liked a large version as I am sure greater detail could be brought out of this. Hand-holding a 500mm is no easy task and in my experience getting an image perfectly framed is difficult.
