A Turkey Vulture swoops low honing in on a meal (a dead coyote out of the frame) in Southern AZ. I went with the widescreen crop not for the pun title (well maybe a bit), but to get the desolate western landscape feel like in a spaghetti western.

1/1000, f/7.1 ISO 800, 80-400 @ 400mm, D600, top and bottom cropped, not much off the sides.

C&C appreciated,
Verm

Interesting idea John,
However there is way too much OOF for this image to work IMO.

I think the light and detail on the vulture make this work. I think it would be better if the bird were more in the LH portion of the frame. Not sure if that is water below the mountains, but I would try to straighten that line where the mountains meet the water? to horizontal. A very nice idea! Sharon

Retried it losing some off the left and darkening the FG to tone down that OOF bit. I think this brings more focus on the bird this way, but for me loses some of the feeling of desolation. The blue in the back is likely a mirage - there is the San Pedro River back there - a thin strip of green - but no big body of water.

I like the wide open space.. The background works really well here.

John,
The repost works really well, the darker more close feeling foreground adds so much to the image and really illustrates the vastness of the BG much better. The positioning of the Vulture with more room to the right is perfect in the repost also.
Well Done . . . :toast:

Interesting. For me it doesn't quite work.
I think there is too much of the brown grass in the foreground, moving the bird to the left side would (IMO) improve composition and finally, unfortunately, the whole image does not seem to be very sharp.
I'd put this one down as an idea that is still work in progress.

John, I like the overall idea here of the bird within its landscape. I like the sense of place and am not bothered by the setting being oof. I like the comp of the repost a lot better with more space in front of the bird than behind. I think what's missing for me here is some better light--this is rather flat, though perhaps some levels and curves adjustments could liven things up a bit.
