I focused on that perch and waited a couple of hours for this little guy to come in and sit still for 2 seconds. Finally it happened. He was sallying over a pond.

Cropped to 50% of FF.
1/500s, f/8, ISO 500. 600mm + TC 1.7X on D800.

IMHO the strong light makes for a dramatic image! I saw these for the first time this spring, did not get near as good of a photo as this one! Do wish the shadow on its head was a bit lighter, but just a small nit. Thanks for sharing. Where was this taken?

Excellent work managing the light here Claude, well composed frame.
Great details & I like the contrasting mostly neutral gray of the BG too.
Let's see, 2 hours for 2 seconds sounds like a good trade-off to me

Your larger version shows just enough light in the eye to make the near straight on view work in this. I like the cobweb, too. Good subject! Sharon

Claude I slight head turn would really have been the icing on the cake but I do like the dark bg that sets this bird off so well, very nice indeed.

A little head turn showing more of the eye would be nice, but I understand this is the best that you can get in a split 2 seconds. Still a very fine image as it is.

This bird was sallying over a pond at the edge of a Red Pine plantation on my land John, it will most certainly nest in the Pines as his name suggests. The flying insects were numerous (and some were biting) and this guy was all over the place, gorging itself on them, he finally caught a large moth and went back to the Pines not to be seen again. (North of Montreal, Quebec).
Thanks for your comments. Claude :wavey:

The colour combination here Claude really works well, with a striking plumage and a lovely diffused BKG, just enough colour in it. The spiders tail is a very nice touch.

Your patience served you well Claude. I love the dark background and the perch-my only nit is that the yellows seem a tad harsh to me, and I would be tempted to reduce the luminance in that channel a few points. :toast:
