Totally different from the Common Wildebeest, much more handsome
Once roamed South Africa in immense herds but almost totally wiped out by hide hunters, since 1938 when only 300 existed the numbers have increased in recent years, although they are mostly confined to National Parks and private reserves in South Africa.
I took this image in Mountain Zebra National Park, where there can be quite large herds.

Very handsome indeed Ken  But, I do like the active body pose with that head turn and menacing look in its eyes. Good photo of this black wildebeest.

Vincent pretty much summarized my thoughts, fine image. Fairly tight in the frame but it helps to emphasize the wonderful coat, musculature and that "get lost mr. photographer" expression.

Vincent and Gary,

Thanks very much for your comments, I really like getting images of the "lesser" beastsfor me there are just as interesting as the normal fare.

By the way Vincent I always use the term Gnu rather than Wildebeest, I am reliably informed that is the only San derived word in the English language, and I figure the need a break.
