D800 Nikkor 600mm SB 900 flash 1/1250 f/8 ISO500 white balance auto RAW Manual Processed in CS6, NIK and Lightroom.

After several days photographing hummingbirds at Huntington Beach Central Library, I decided to see what I could do at home. I have several plants on my patio and in planters that attract hummers, but none are in the right light or have the right backgrounds. I went to the nursery, purchased a couple of plants in pots and moved them on the greenbelt to shoot. I was able to put them where the light was right and shot from my patio from a lounge chair. Although I did not have much time, I was able to get a few good shots. I hope you like this one. Comments welcome

Outstanding, Patrick. You caught a splendid position and posture and I've never seen the little winglets (or whatever they are called) at the rear base of the wings. Looking forward to more great shots.

Interesting flight shot with the tail up and seeing some of the iridescent color. The larger image seems to be a little soft, not sure if the focus point was the tail. These hummers are really hard to get all the bird in focus with detail.

Nice to get good shots from a lounge chair! Much better than dragging big lenses foir miles..

Unusual pose, sharp body catching the irridescense, and nicely-blurred wings.

Great look at how the hummingbird maneuvers its body in flight. The body on the larger version looks a little blurry, but the head is plenty sharp.
