Another trip to Uganda and we found another Shoebill, and this one moved about quite a bit!
We found this one on the shores of Lake Charles, in the Ishasha area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This time the image was taken from an open vehicle.

Awesome Ken. I particularly like the evil look in its eye and the raised foot. Just that raised foot makes the image so different to a bird with both feet in the water. Combined with the look in its eye the raised foot is very sinister. If you haven't done so already it is worth studying how these storks bring up their young. Quite brutal.

Martin,

Thanks for your comment, these are remarkable birds and we have been extremely lucky to have 2 good sightings in 3 attempts, Uganda is the place for these!

I presume you saw the footage on the BBC Africa series, only one chick surviving is quite commonplace in the wild, particularly with larger birds.

Very cool bird. One of the best images of this species I have seen.

Very nice Ken. Excellent techs and setting, love the birds massive bill.
It looks like a two degree CCW might be in order to make it perfect.
Well done :toast: :toast:
Post Script: Ken, I did the CCW rotation to compensate for the water or camera 'tilt', not the birds tendency to lean as it moves..

An ugly bird - but an interest shot. It looks like it needs a counter-clockwise rotation though

Ron, Howard and Luke.

Thanks very much for your comments which are much appreciated

Regarding the need for rotation, the slight lean on the bird is caused by the walking movement, like most moving animals it wobbles from side to side.

I do not think it is ugly, just very interesting

Wouldn't like to meet this guy in a dark alley! Despite the wobble in the walk, the water pattern seems to indicate the need for a CCW correction.

What a very cool (and ugly) bird you managed to shoot Ken. I have never seen one of these, but what an interesting subject. I also feel like it needs a CCW rotation. I saw your reply, but I don't think that wobble translates very well and would bet most people (like a few here already) would just assume it needs a rotation, so might be worth doing IMO.
All the same....great shot and also meant to say...love the raised foot as well.

Clearly from the other comments this bird is misunderstood. I see great sensitivity in his eyes. He is just begging for understanding. Love the shot.

As nearly everybody has suggested some rotation, I have taken another look and I think it looks better rotated.

Here is a quick repost

What an impressive species Ken, love the setting. Do you have any more room at the bottom for the 'virtual leg'?

Howard,

Thanks for your comment.

Rob,

I am a little confused by your comment, the whole of each leg is visible apart from the piece under water?
