Not an exciting animal like a grizzly, wolf, or tiger, but interesting in their own way.

Nikon D300; 400mm; f4@ 1/320th; ISO 400; HH from kayak; 80%FF.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

Great reflection and a pleasing image. Details are lacking a bit - partially due to the wetness I'm assuming. I would expect slightly better image quality with a D300 and 80% of the image but overall it's really pleasing

I like the concept and simplicity of this portrait. Seems a little soft, possibly due to a little camera wobble.

Hi Tom,
nicely captured, i like Beavers.
By coincidence i just photographed some beavers this morning, light was bad, so nothing good. Beavers represent Canada's wilderness!

Thanks for the input, guys.

I'm thinking the perceived softness can be attributed to the fact the beaver had just surfaced and the hair is smoothed down since it's so wet.

I had not applied any sharpening to the shot, but have added a bit with this repost - does it look better or still soft?

Hi Tom, I totally agree, however with all that kit I take my hat off to you in a kayak, but the perspective is great. You could go tighter with a 16x9 to emphasis the content, with a little less above and more below 1/3 - 2/3 ratio?

I also would just watch your ISO, upping it isn't an issue and having a higher SS would help nail the action.

Tom,
The repost is a big improvement, the increased sharpness brings out the details. I especially like the water detail in its "bow" wake. The FG, BG textures are effective in isloating the beaver. NIce work in tough conditions.

I like everything about the picture --- colors, tones, composition. I think sharpening improved the image slightly but I liked it in its original form also. Beaver are not too common where I live, a southwestern suburb of Chicago, although I saw one this AM. But the recent fatality due to an attack by a rabid beaver makes one think about proximity.

Nice job, especially from a kayak. I like the reflection in the eye, the bow wave showing motion, and overall a nice composition.

Very nice Tom; I love the excellent use of reflection and the total isolation of the subject. The repost is certainly an improvement. Great work! :toast:
