Into the Abyss

Nikon D3x, 14mm, f/16, ISO 100, 15 and 30 second exposures manually blended using layer masks in Photoshop. This one is one from spring 2011.

Seastacks and stone fins left exposed by minus tides give way to post-sunset light and streaking clouds, in the backcountry of Washington's Olympic National Park.

Joseph Rossbach and I are leading a photo workshop in Olympic National Park next month and still have a few empty spaces.

Thanks for looking!

Everything works wonderfully for me in this image...except the cloud movement. Ordinarily that's something I like, but here I find it a little disconcerting for some reason and it pulls my attention from the other elements in the scene.

Alex - The LLC is a bit too dark for me, but I'm sure you might open things up more for a print. The dark and lights work great in this and the angled light brings me back to the far stacks. Lovely.

I like the dark dramatic and moody feel to this one. The streaking clouds are perfect. Can't wait to get back up there.

Great comp and light in this Alex. Like how the back clouds mimic the seastacks. Beautiful capture.

Lovely looking seascape. I agree that perhaps a longer exposure to streak the clouds more might have worked better.

Really nice shot Alex! My only nit is that I would consider lowering the vignette fall off a little bit on the left for balance. Still works.

Great light and those fins make some wonderful lead in lines to draw me into the image. My only suggestion would be to lighten the LLC just a bit. A very beautiful image, Alex. :toast:

Great use of lines. I also prefer to lighten up the LLC.

I like the cloud movement mirroring the fin lines, and the post-sunset glow seals the deal. :toast:

Looks great!
But it reminds me the work of Marc Adamus , I wish it was more details in dark tones. I dont like so deep shadows.. but it only on my taste..
