Mantis Pastel

I took this portrait of a Mantis in tall grass recently, and am interested in other opinions. To get the soft look, I positioned the camera so that golden grass was partially obstructing the front of the lens. In post I increased contrast and brightness and cropped a bit.

I like this artful effect ... striking outlines and mono-color simplifies and emphasizes the subject. I see real balance in this tall portrait...and like it. But, like many of my wide and squat panos...the viewers seem to prefer the 3 x 2 ratio. That said, my only thought would be to crop a bit off the top using the grass-head as a balance on the left side that offsets the mantis on the right. Nice shot!

Really well done, Thomas, to achieve this effect. Very original and artistic. I agree with Ken about cropping off the top (although I note this has been cropped, so that may reduce your ability to crop further). :toast:

This is really nice! I love the monochromatic treatment & the feeling that you are looking through rice paper! You have been making some awesome posts! I think NPN recommends making about 5 comments per post but you are new so most people here will understand. I am looking forward to more!
