Trillium Portrait

Trillium flowers have just started popping up in the evergreen forests around my home here near Eugene, Oregon. Each year the forest comes alive with them briefly, and I vowed that this year i'd attempt to do justice to the display. To get this portrait, I laid the camera flat on the ground so that green moss would partially obstruct the lower half of the photo, and used live view to frame the composition. Canon 5d Mark iii, 300mm f/4 lens, 1/20 sec at f/4, ISO 400, handheld

Trilliums in my area tend to bend their heads downward making them a difficult subject. You've done an admirable job isolating the flower and using the foliage to soften its surroundings. On this site we tend to call that process a "cram" and Nathan Buck is the master. Check out his gallery for some inspiration. Welcome to flora.

Thomas: Welcome to NPN in general and to the finest Flora gallery on the planet in particular. This is a beautiful cram and a terrific POV. I've yet to use live view for this kind of shooting but will certainly look for opportunities after seeing this image. Great to have you aboard and looking forward to more. >=))>

Welcome to the flora gallery. A fine first addition! I like the narrow dof and the buttery background behind the subject. I like the accompanying narrative as well. Now's the time to jump in and start critiquing! I look forward to your contribution in images and critiques.

Welcome to NPN Thomas. Beautiful first post, still snow on the ground in the forest areas of N.Y., I think it will be another month before the Trillium start to show up.. Beautiful work, looking forward to seeing more.

Fantastic art Thomas! The fading stem and choice of depth and background are wonderful in my opinion.
