This image (posted at hopefully 5:43 pm CDT) comes from an Introduction to Digital Photography assignment in early 2011 to illustrate “depth of field.”

I planned over a period of days and did a number of experiments with f/stop and angle of the camera. Pentax K100D Super, Tamron 90 mm f/2.8 macro at f/3.5, ISO 200, flash, tripod. The key: angle between the plane of the subject and the line of focus, about 10 degrees.

The Bible I used was the only one I had at hand. I later learned it was used by my ex-wife’s grandmother in the early 1900’s: Any port in a storm. The idea presented itself in connection with light; I had been thinking about what light is and where it comes from and how it came into being in the first place. Looks like I am not alone.

Postscript: My wife told me NPN is probably not the best forum for performance art and metaphor, and based upon the response I have not received to the wrist watch image, as an empiwristist I have to agree with her; Quoth the Raven: Nevermore.

Now you tell me the previous image was a wrist watch! I thought so. . .but wasn't sure. Anyway, this is a unique image you made here with your point of focus. The only clear "lighting" or focus is on the passage about light. Certainly is a great illustration and use of "depth of field".

You've been posting some unique images for this challenge. . .and challenging me along with them! Do you think you can find an unusual "nature" macro? Something not manmade? That probably was the intention of the theme, but it was never really spelled out in that way. :wavey:

Do you think you can find an unusual "nature" macro? Something not manmade?

Perhaps now we are getting to the crux of it; the seeming imaginary dhchotomy "man" and "nature".

The origins of this idea are very much rooted in European theology. This NPN forum has to have a unique focus; "Nature". I underatand that. By a broader definition, one could call virtually anything that could be recorded, any electromagnetic photons, "nature". And properly so because what is it that is unnatural, except, perhaps for some thoghts that occur to the human mind? Thoughts and deeds! Animals do not behave a cruely as humans have demonstrated they can wilfully do. While rocks and winds may wreak havoc, it is not intentional at least.

The only way we can establish that norms exist in a human social context is when they are crossed over and sanctions occur, however mild and veiled they may be. Your criteria for this week's challenge are as follows, and I quote:

Weekly Challenge #577 (03/24/13 - 03/30/13) Unusual Macro - Submitted by William Gillis. Macro shots excluding the following subjects; flowers, animals, reptiles and insects.

I took that to be a sign of freedom. In other forums here, namely the POP and Artistic ones, "nature" is not necessarily required. I must confess that I took the literal statement for this week literally.

Now, (and I must admit that my wife has proven herself right yet once atain), going forward, I will take your comments under advisement, Carolyn Derstein, and I will seek out only images, like the one of the milkweed seed, that nobody can argue are not nature. Got it: Not flowers, animals, reptiles, or insects (which is a bit redundant in that flowers and animals would have covered it), but also not anything not clearly within the domain of "nature", distinctly apart from mankind.

Hmmmm....I think this has to do a lot with nature....super nature actually. It also has to do with the whole reason why we can even have photography of nature. I haven't seen your wrist watch image yet, but will take a look. Mostly my stuff seems to be too obscure for the masses as well but probably for different reasons.
