The colors are spectacular and the shapes do a good job of keeping my eyes moving around the frame. Looks like great fun.

Delightful anarchy of color, form, and floatation. Certainly unique subject matter.

Thanks so much folks...I used a straw to move the water and oil around and just clicked the shutter any time I saw an interesting pattern. I got a lot to say the least...but this one struck me as particularly interesting...almost a Yin and Yang situation. I appreciate the comments! Give it a try yourself...it's great fun!

Excellent example of this genre, Kate. Reminds me of large gas giant planets with moons.

Sorry I have to use this worn out cliche again Kate, but I just have to say it - COOL!!
Maybe some more info on how you made this?
You don't have to give away the farm, just a few nuggets would be nice
Well done!
PS - OK I see your additional comment. What did you use for BG BTW?

I don't mind sharing the technique at all...it's fun and other people should try it. I set up a pyrex dish with about an inch of water. I placed it supported on both sides, over some colored papers. I've used flowers for this too. I used canola oil...different oils will give different bubble/patterns. Canola is more thick...vegetable oil is thinner looking. I positioned the camera with a 50mm macro above and parallel to the water and oil. I used a remote release and Live view so I didn't have to hunch over the camera for extended periods of time. I took a straw and swirled the oil toward the area my camera was focused on and just clicked the shutter whenever interesting patterns formed. The oil moved pretty quick so I used a fast shutter speed...1/200 sec at f/8 ISO 2000. I bounced two daylight balanced bulbs off of my beige ceiling to light this...didn't want the lights shining directly on it...too many highlights. Shot with a Nikon D600. Others that I know of who have tried this with different oils can wait for the oil to settle and shoot with a lower ISO and shutter speed. Experiment and find what method you like best. Thanks so much folks for all the comments and kind words! This was fun to do!

Very fun! Just did a few shots myself, but I love how this one turned out. Fun way to keep up your hobby in the dreary winter months, eh?
