Val Roseg Fall + REPOST

Val Roseg Fall - Engadin, Switzerland.

I had a hard time processing this. It took a lot of time to get it right, I hope it turned out well. I'm interested in your thoughts.

Because of the wide dynamic range I had to take 5 shots to cover the tones from the shadows to the sky. Than blended them manually with the help of Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks and used some burn/dodge.

I shoot also wider views and verticals, which I may post later.

*** After posting it, and comparing to other images, I wonder if it's a bit under-saturated?
**** I read some comments that there is some color management issue here, maybe that's why it looks different after posting

Thank you for your comments!

Shantikara

Looks great!. Your image portrays the Swiss mountains very well.
Saturation coul indeed be increased a tad.

This looks good. I relly like it. The only thing I would do is to increase the saturation a bit.

I increased a bit the saturation, I hope now it's right.
Before I used the neutral picture style from the Canon Raw, and did not compensate enough for the loss of saturation.
Usually I tend to be too careful not to overdo things, than end up with a weaker image. :frown:

Lovely scene, oodles of fine detail and beauty to take in here.
I actually prefer the original as the repost has a bit too much punch for me (particularly the blue sky)

Beautiful scene with lots of nice details through out. I like the original better but maybe just a little more saturation in the foreground.

Nice place - reminds me a lot of my visits to Valais. In fall it's just amazing there. The shot looks good to me. The clouds aren't the most pleasing one being there in such a big block. But sometimes the weather just won't cooperate. The saturation in the original looks fine - maybe a hint brighter shadows with a tad more saturation on the foreground might work. Just don't any saturation to the sky (like it happened in version 2). This enhances the tonality falloff towards the corners, which I don't like that much.

I think it's a perfectly fine image. I also think you went too far with the saturation in the second image, particularly the sky. The ground area in the second image still looks fine. Perhaps you could mask off the sky. In fact, since you mentioned using Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks, have you tried his saturation masks? They would be ideal here, as they would help hold back the saturation in the cyan area of the sky, while increasing the saturation ONLY where it is needed. Try them.

Shantikara, What a beautiful scene you captured. The large version is a pleasure to view, and I like the original best. Nice work! :toast:

Wonderful image! I too like the original image, however I might keep the saturation boost on the mountains.
Nicely composed and processed!

The processing looks good on my monitor, enough detail in the cloud. Beautiful scene.

I made some changes, a bit more saturation, and a little brighter shadows.
This is an early morning shot, after my previous post, so there is some frost in the foreground.

Andreas: I was expecting some comments on the clouds  the sky was changing very fast, and I was also shooting verticals and wider shoots, where the sky was better. But it was mostly covered. In one way it is good, because it worked as a giant soft box for the peaks. I will see if I can use a better sky from the wider shots.

Michael: Thanks, good idea. Now I just used a simple masking for the strong colored larch on the middle left and the sky.

I think i looks pretty darn good, Shantikara! Really like the light on those distant trees below the peak. I agree with Andreas on the clouds, but no biggee. Maybe a little less sharpening for web. Beautiful scene...

This looks very nice to me. I like the second version too, though the first one maybe feels a bit more natural. My only thought might be to try and pull a little more texture out of the clouds, though this does look pretty realistic as is.
