Ontonagon River

First, I want to thank all of you for your comments on my last post! This is a picture I made during my recent trip to Upper MI. It was taken at Bond Falls and the river is the middle branch of the Ontonagon. This area was away from the heavy lake effect snows and wind so it was quite nice shooting here. Tom H and I enjoyed our time at this location before heading back in to the wind and snow along Lake Superior. I now wish I had used a little longer shutter speed for the water but this is what I have.
5D3, 24mm, iso 100, f/16, 1/30 sec and polarizer. Converted to b/w.

Nick, this is a well balanced composition to me with a lot of appealing elements to explore. The diverse cascades draw my attention first, then I enjoy following the river into the depth. Your choice of shutter speed keeps interesting textures in the water for me, making up the lack of textures in the foreground snow nicely.

Nick, this is a well converted black & white image. I love the diverse cascades and you did a good job with the composition. A very peaceful scene

I agree, a beautiful scene! I think the exposure is just about right. There's a few highlights that seem a bit bright but im on an uncalibrated monitor so take that fwiw. Nice shot!

Excellent conversion, Nick! Love the rich blacks and pure whites. A beautiful scene, and your comp pretty much nails it. :toast:

The water looks great at that speed in this b&w. I love the clarity and depth of this scene. Nicely done

Nick, if I thought I could spend a few days in the UP, and come home with the b&w snowy images you've been displaying lately, I'd be on my way! Unfortunately, with my luck, I would bring along 70 degree weather! Which, while under other circumstances, might not be a bad thing, it would surely destroy the peaceful wintry scenes you've been creating.
FWIW - I would never have guessed this to be shot @ 1/30 sec. It looks like a much slower shutter speed.

The regular size picture doesn't come close to doing this justice. The larger version is wonderful. Well seen, and great job on the b&w conversion.

Thanks much to all of you for your comments on this.
Michael, Thanks, and yes, the exposure does look like it could have been longer to me as well, but I checked again and it was at 1/30. If you decided to head to the UP let me know... Nick

Wow, nice little winter scene! I like the tones of your conversion too. I also like the look/texture of the foreground snow.

If this were mine, it's not, but if it were, I might dodge the water highlites a LITTLE. Mostly just the cascades for some extra pop and contrast there.

I like this a lot, Nick. I like the composition and your choice of the aspect ratio fits the composition very nicely. I actually like the texture in the water so I think your shutter speed was just right. I also like the tonal range in this image. There's a lot to enjoy here.

I just love your way with light, Nick. It's an excellent comp, but your development makes it look even better.

Beautiful comp and conversion Nick. Not sure if it has been mentioned but I would suggest pushing the highlights a bit more in the water, they look a little grey on my monitor. Minor stuff though, great work!
