This image is deceptive in that the shadow almost look like another real stalk of the plant instead of just a shadow. I think having this image in color instead would have helped differentiate the plant from the shadow and, as a result, made it a stronger image. I like all the ripples in the sand.

The shadow-defined sand ripples make a nice counterpoint to the sharpness of the yucca and its shadow. I think b-w was a solid choice for presentation as it strips the image down to what makes it most interesting--forms and shadows.

Good choice for this WC, Sandy. Without shadow there would be nothing here to look at other than the sad-looking yucca. The shadows that allow us to see the texture of the sand make a great background for the yucca and its shadow. (just guessing that it's not snow, but hard to imaging that, siting here in single-digit temperatures -- (+) and (-) -- for days -- ) While I like the idea of portraying the large expanse here, I think this might be graphically more pleasing if the ripples made a more uniform background. Without altering reality, I guess the way to do that would be to crop some of the top, and perhaps some of the bottom just to approximate a rule of thirds comp. Just an idea to play with...
