The Paint Pools

I posted a horizontal of this sunset awhile back. I now think this vertical captures the colors in both the sky and the potholes. Would like to think how this stacks up with the others from this location.

Nikon D800 w/14-24. Two shot exposure blend.

I love the foreground with all its tiny pools. Beautiful patterns and foorms and I also like how the colors are reflecting in those pools. Beautiful colors in the sky, too. The processing looks good to me.

Great title for a great picture.... I like this one a lot better than the horizontal one, for exactly the reason you describe yourself! The color transitions are fantastic.

Otherworldly Jimmy! I think I prefer this as it makes the potholes more prominent. For some reason, I like the image better when I crop off the top 1/4 of the sky, mostly the lighter blues. I Think the brightness may draw my eye away from the potholes, and I can see from the reflection in the potholes that there is blue up there. A detail of just the potholes would also be a winner IMO, especially when they transition from blue to orange. Next time! :toast:

This looks great Jimmy! Great detail in the larger version and I love all the small pools with the reflected colors. I also like this with Harry's crop suggestion. Nice work!! :toast:

Compared to the horizontal image I like the warm / cool gradient here both in the sky and then mirrored in the foreground. Hard to choose between the two - I'm not sure that I like one more than the other they are just different and both excellent. Interesting to see the comparison of the two images.

Great sunset colors with one of my favorite local locations. The reflections really make the shot special.

Love the pattern of these potholes, Jimmy, and with this vertical the line in the center of your composition works well to lead the eye back. I like the prominent role that the potholes play in this composition compared to your horizontal version; in fact I might consider cropping a bit off the top to place even more emphasis on the foreground. Either way, an outstanding image.

The sky is really nice, but for me at least, it detracts from abstract quality of the water-filled depressions with their warm colored rims. But that's just my desire to make everything into an abstract. The colors and light work great here and are very well balanced.

Incredible view of these potholes! I think I would also like some of the sky cropped off as the upper blue does seem to draw ones attention away. Otherwise I think this is gorgeous!
