Larger version included, but it looks best on a dark background, here.

Twilight blues envelop an ancient tree on the rim of Oregon's Crater Lake.

Perfectly framed and beautifully crafted. You definitely know what you're doing.

Meticulously composed and it works very well. The colors add to what would have already been a very nice image.

Beautifully composed and executed to perfection. I love the blue cast in the trunk and the overall feel. Outstanding.

Alex, nice framing with the gnarly tree. The lavender tone makes a pleasing twilight color.

Viewing your images and getting out more, I am appreciated the twilight hour more and more. Nice comp. Lots of great lines to usher one deeper into the scene...

Cool. It's the Zack Schnepf tree/comp. The mood is way different in this one though, and I like the subtle processing of light on the details. The glow/ghosting or something on the horizon strikes me as odd though, and that would be my only critique.

You really own the Crater Lake rim - a great selection of images with lots of variety from your various posts. While comp. not my fav of yours from the rim, I love the lighting and that tree trunk. If that tree was bending over the lake instead of exiting the top - can't have it all I guess! :toast:

Very nice Alex. Love the sweep of the tree and the pastel twilight colors. Like Marc though, the first thing I noticed was the "glowing" on the horizon. It almost looks like a brush was used to emphasize the last light in that area? Other than that, it is very enjoyable.

Alex, this is a very different shot of Crater Lake from the usual. A very nice one. Maybe the tree extended too far to include all of it? Also, the top parts of the tree seem a bit dark. Anyway, there is a lot to like about this shot.

The light on the tree is what really balances the composition here. A beauty.

Marc, I tried to come up with my own comp here, but it turns out if you want the branch to frame the rim and not hang in front of it, and also to get Wizard Island in, there's basically only the Schnepf vertical and horizontal comps. However, facing west, I came up with my own comp of the tree that I posted last year (attached).

Peter/Marc, I will also post a version with the glow fixed below, as I guess I was overzealous with letting it spill over the horizon.

Dennis, the only way to get the whole tree in from this perspective is to do a vertical (which I have, but I was just feeling the horizontal for this one), or stitch multiple exposures (couldn't do that, as these were already 2 minute exposures and the light/color would have changed for each one).

Repost is excellent! I may try to make it out here this year, just don't know when.

What a neat tree and the atmosphere and color suits it quit well. Great work here.

Hey Alex, as you know I do dig your processing skills and this looks really good to me. A stellar location no doubt, and really nice conditions. I do prefer the repost with less haze on the horizon, but somehow the fg looks a little flatter than it could be. I think you could push the lights just slightly to add a little more shine and not disturb the mood of the image.

Navin, it was definitely processed to be viewed on a calibrated monitor against a dark background - I agree it's dark here on NPN. I suppose I should consider that many people will indeed be viewing it in less than ideal conditions, when saving JPEGs for web presentation.

Here's a version with the horizon glow fixed, a bit more oomph in the lights, and also with the top dark parts of the tree brought up a bit per Dennis' suggestion.

Here it is on a dark background.

Love the comp and light. The top of the tree does seem darker than it should be.

Fantastic comp Alex and for me the light on the tree adds so much to this image. I love your color palette!

You have used the crater lake to provide an excellent backdrop for the dead tree, Alex. The subdued lighting adds a lot to the mood of this image. I like your composition very much, but would have liked to see the entire tree in the frame also, particularly the gnarly top. :toast:
