Canyon Light

I couldn't think of a more creative name...

Anyways, this was the first shot I took Friday evening while on the south rim of the grand canyon shooting with Doug K. The light reminded me of my other image from the north rim "Royal Rainbow" just without the rainbow. The light just beamed on this section of the canyon as the ominous clouds above kept rolling in/out. Comments and critiques are greatly appreciated. Large version included.

Canon 7d
Canon 17-40mm @27mm
f11
ISO 100
1/80th sec
CPL
Tripod.

Extraordinary light and atmosphere here combine for one of the most powerful GC views I've seen in a long while . :toast:

The lighting and contrast look great, as does the shadowing on the bottom to accentuate the light on the temples. You know my preferences, but this seems a little too yellow.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

John, this was just the beginning of the light we were fortunate to witness. The clouds turned pink and orange but not explosive later in the evening.

Doug, I can see what you mean about the yellows. Ironically, I barely processed the colors in here and thought I pulled back the yellows in the RAW. Perhaps I'll have to go in again and tone them down.

Very nice light - looks foreboding actually. I like the strong shadows with just a touch of detail and the contrast with the golden light. Excellent work!!

Very dramatic scene. I have been to the Grand Canyon 7 times and still want to go back for more. It's great that you managed to be here at the right time when something dramatic developed. Very amazing lighting situation.

I'll echo Marc's thoughts - extraordinary light and atmosphere indeed. I can't stop staring. Don't tone down the yellows - nothing is oversaturated, and the warmth of the light contrasting with the unsaturated shadow adds to the mystique and mood. Don't change that light! I'd love to see this in print and just be able to inspect every detail at my leisure.
