Another shot using a rented Canon 500mm. This is a squirrel I caught in the snow investigating a corn cob. Comments and critiques welcome.

With the snow for a FG and BG, it's easy to spot the subject. I like it. Good pose from the guy and you got lots of detail. Nice comp and the exposure is good. Tough to get these guys to stay still so you did really well here.

Jerry, like the image, but for me I would like abit more detail in the snow. Thanks for sharing, I do enjoy photographing these guys.

Nice image of this little guy, Jerry! I like the snowdrops on its nose, gives it just that bit extra.

Hi Jerry, please enclose if this squirrel was baited by you with the corn cob since images of baited wildlife are prohibited in this Gallery. Sorry, but those are Gallery rules.

Hi Jerry,
I really like the almost "graphic" look to this one. Some might argue for a little more white-on-white detail in the snow, but there IS a little there and I like how there are only two things to look at in this one.
Not sure how much of a crop this is (and consequently if you would feel comfortable to crop it tighter), but if this were mine I'd move away from the squarish crop (to me it doesn't support the subject matter well). I'd crop it a little tighter (assuming you have the pixels to do so) and return it to a 3:2 aspect ratio horizontally - I'd remove about 1/2 of the empty space beyond the corn cob on the right, about half the foreground, and some at the top too. You've got a nice (and right now potential) diagonal flow going on here that you could work with on that 3:2 crop...
Cheers...and thanks for sharing this...

Thanks for all the constructive comments. And Brad, Thanks for not disappearing. (smile) I posted the image with a different crop.

Hey Jerry,
Disappear - me? Heck no, here to haunt everyone still. I prefer the new crop but if you have the space (on the left side) I'd shift the subjects even more to the right (and add some more of that white space to the left). But that's just me...
Cheers...

Vincent,
No, I did not bait the squirrel. The squirrel appeared while I was photographing ducks. The corn cob was already there, possibly brought in by the squirrels from nearby agricultural fields. Sorry. I probably should have pointed that out.

Thanks Jerry for the explanation. I love the 'high-key' effect and the resulting graphic appeal here. The repost is definitely an improvement.

I like the new crop better too. You are really getting your money's worth with that 500mm rental!

The isolation provided by the high key effect of the snow works well for me. The cob adds interest. My only nit is that a greater depth of field to keep more of the squirrel in focus would have made this much stronger.
