Spotted a small group of deer far off in a field, too far away for quality images, but I decided to try for some photos anyway. After down loading was able to see the males' antlers are not growing properly. I hope I will see him again to check on how his antlers are developing.

John, good comp and eye contact. And yes, way too far out for good resolution. One can especially see it in the larger image.

Wow, John 1200mm equivalent, that's a lot! You are right that the distance does not benefit the IQ it never does, in general the closer a subject, the better IMO. It indeed looks like something is not right with the antlers. I hope you will be able to get a better shot of this individual some other day to shrae with us how this develops

John, it's hard to tell from the photo about the antlers on this deer. This is the time of year when they start to shed them for the winter and will regrow them in the spring. Several potential causes: 1) it's genetic, 2) it is a result of damage early in the growth cycle in the spring, and 3) it could be an antlered doe. I've seen a number of them through the years and they usually are kind of weird. Mostly only one antler and usually still in velvet. Can't tell here but those are possibilities.Whatever is the cause, it certainly hasn't impacted his/her physical condition.
