Freckled Duck (Stictonetta naevosa) photographed in a red gum swamp in southern New South Wales at first light this morning. This bird were completely unfazed by my camoed form in kayak. Freckled Ducks are endemic to inland areas of Australia, and are in a family of their own.

Canon 5DIII, EF500 f/4 + 1.4x, handheld from kayak. ISO 400, f/7.1, 1/800. Cropped for composition.

Never saw or heard of this species...is this a drake or hen? What an unique bill. Conditions seem a bit bright, but exposure looks good. I like the bits of milkweed lit up by the sun. Thanks for posting. Sharon
