An intimate capture of a weathered old snag on Santa Rosa Sound, across from Pensacola Beach, FL. I liked the weathered look and the detail, as well as the muted colors.

Large version available for better detail.

D2x w/ 35-70 @ 70mm
.3 sec @ f/16 - MLU and remote release
100 ISO
No filters (that I remember)
Tripod
Capture One 6, CS4

I would appreciate your thoughts, comments, and critiques. Thanks for looking.

Bill, this is just awesome. I'm always impressed with your post processing skills. Not to mention your sharp eye for finding these intimate subjects.
(Reminds me of a topographic map, or an aerial shot of some strange terrain)

Weathered wood—always a fascinating subject. Almost like clouds, one can imagine much from the details (and presentation). This looks like a closeup of a very old, one-eyed giant! Good work, Bill, and some astute cropping. I like that you managed to get the focal points at the third interstices.

A fascinating photograph Bill. The textures and grain of the wood come through so well. The light on this is fabulous as well giving subtle variations in the the color. Outstanding work.

Bill,

This is wonderful! I love the texture and details here, most especially showcased in the larger view. I think you've captured and processed the subtle colors beautifully, although I think there might be room to bring out the reds a little - if you were so inclined, but this is quite excellent as presented.

What a wonderful old tree.

Great find. Those old trees are so amazing, with their wrinkled forms, deep cracks, etc. You managed to capture some good color as well. At first, I was upset (from a photographers perspective) about the bg showing at the top. The more I look at it, and enjoy the image, I love it. The bg doesn't bother me at all... Nice work!

The lines, shapes and textures are beautiful here, Bill! For my tastes I might have been tempted to crop off the top the top part of the image to below the top left open part. Very nicely seen and beautifully executed!

Wonderful lines and textures Bill. I might be inclined to crop square to remove the darker areas..... but you know how that goes..... everyone has an opinion.

Love the textures Bill. The eye in the corner really stands out adding a human element to the image. What a great find! Just to be a little picky I would crop the top below the out of focus branches in the background.

WOW, I'm really liking this one, Bill. These old beat-up tree snags can provide some excellent abstract type images. The textures, lines, twists, and turns all add to the viewing dynamics on this capture. Very well done....
