Baby Alligator

Since I hardly ever shoot anything other than birds, my 400mm 5.6L rarely is off my 50D. But...I've never shot in Florida before! I quickly found that in many areas, especially when shooting the wading birds, they were too close for my 400mm. That's never a problem for any bird around South Dakota! But I did start to shoot some with my rarely used 70-200 4.0L. I had it on when I came across two of these little alligators, less than a foot long each, a ways back on the trail at Shark Valley in the Everglades. I didn't see "mom" until I was leaning down and shooting these little guys, but she was a good 15 feet back and not too worried about me.

Canon 50D, 70-200 4.0L @ 135mm, ISO 400, 1/200, f9.

You "think" she didn't care about you..........But, Mama gators can be quite protective! 15 feet was way too close to a adult , anyway. Have fun shooting, but be careful! We don't want to lose you. :wavey:

Hi Terry,

Kind of a cute little guy - and quite helpful in curling its tail around so it could fit into the frame! The gator stands out nicely from the brown/red ground cover. Perhaps a little more depth of field here - to sharpen up the tail - would be nice...but I see you're already stopped down to f9 so I'm guessing "finding" that extra DoF would have been challenging.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this one...
