Out of the fog

Another one from my fav spot in the Jura mountain(Switzerland)
Autumn and winter is the best time of year taking pictures from that location.
Since the color version wasn't really appealing I tried a black & white conversion and I think this works quiet well here.

I've examined this for awhile now in the large version, and I feel the image makes a powerful existential statement.

Initially, we see the primordial contest between rock, wind, and water. And life, represented by the trees, is sort of caught in between. Luminosity-wise, I like the flow from bright to dark from left to right. And the trip back down the hill from the trees at the top to those on the edge of the cliff.

Then on the vertical face of that cliff, there is this one, brave branch growing out about half way down.

Then, yet further down, it is foggy yet clear that trees are there too.

And then, one sees, off in the distance, mimicking the shape of the waves, evidene of more mountains, presumably with more trees, unseen but imagined.

Especially in the context of current events, this image is so poignant; The Courage to Be, by existential theologian Paul Tillich comes to mnd. You know, at times like this, we need to see images like this. Thanks so much for posting it.

This reminds me a lot of some of the "originals" in b&w..great choice...would have preferred to see a little more of the mountains in the bg, but you get what you get! Good one!

Wow, that cloud looks like a huge wave rolling in! A very cool scene and B&W works well. :toast:

I like the B&W presentation here with the dramatic contrast between the silhouetted areas and the bright highlights in the fog. Very dramatic presentation, Bill.

Bill,

"Islands in the sky," (sorry bad reference to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton - don't ask.)

Wonderful capture, clearly dynamic and quickly changing conditions and you caught this perfectly. No nits here, just wonderful atmosphere, and yes, just like an island in the sky - that's really the first thing that came to mind.

Bill, This does work very well. What a wonderful mood this has. Your b/w conversion did the trick!

I really like the comp in this. The dark black ridge with trees is dramatic rising out of the fog. I could see trying to recover a little more detail in the fog on the left side, but that would be my only nit. Very well done.

This works well in b&w. I like how the dark trees stand out against the clouds. Nice image.
