Hiilawe Rain

Hiilawe falls in Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hiilawe is one of the tallest falls on the Big Island measuring at 1200 feet. Getting to the falls is difficult and at times swimming across the river to follow the trail. It is hard shooting at the falls being in the bowl with swirling mist of water all over. Keeping the water off your lens is almost impossible.

To see the size of this falls, I posted an image by Bruce Omori's of me at the base of the falls.

Aloha

Bruce Omori took a shot of me taking this image. I am at the base of the falls, bottom left with a blue umbrella trying to protect my lens.

Tom,

This is outstanding! Simple is almost always good and the simplicity of this really works - yet this is still so very powerful and yet graceful at the same time. You've got a very complimentary sky to top this off.

Not sure what you could do differently, but I suppose you could play around with bringing out the whites more of the falls and play with shadow detail on the left (not too much though.) But too much more processing of this might change the mood and impact. I think very impressive as presented.

And thanks for adding the image for context and perspective. But I'm afraid I'll have to move it to M&N. jk.

Great work Tom!

I like the perspective you chose, to show the massive scale of the wall. Looks like a lot of 'trouble' (AKA, fun), to make this image! I agree with Lon's suggestions. Glad you posted the second shot, so I can picture the context of the falls. TFS!

Looks like you can pop the lights/highlights just a bit but good to see the final project from the shoot :)

Yeah, pretty impressive. I thought this might be Iceland until I saw your name on it. Not that you couldn't be in Iceland, but you know what I mean!

Very cool image! I like this alot! Pretty neat how the clouds or maybe just rising mist from the water looks so much like the falls itself. Excellent work Tom! :toast:
I also like the shot that Bruce took showing the size of this...impressive.
