American Avocet

Bolivar Peninsula. Upper Texas Coast. November, 2012

D4 ISO 500. 500/4 with 1.4x tc. f5.6 1/5000s -0.3ev. Hand held on shoreline.

I went to this mud flat to shoot Clapper Rails, but three Avocets were there. Even better.

What do you think about the comp? The bird is over the midline, but the trails of mud and water coming from the feet are near to the right edge and I considered them "part of the bird".

Beautiful catch. As to the comp IMO it is great. If you had any more room at top it might look good too. The mud is great and water trailing and the wing position is splendid. I always love the turned up beak. A lovely bird very well presented.

Looks fine to me, but might be even better with more room up front and on top.
Sweet pose and fine detail.Nice exposure on the whites.

Well done, Angela. The bird is super-sharp, well exposed and the moment you've captured is interesting - esp with the trailing mud and water. I'm fine with your comp left to right but if I had the room I'd place the bird a little lower in the frame.

An incredible capture Angela. I really like the wing position (front and back) seems the frame it's head perfectly. Oh and the water and mud trailing behind is icing on the cake. Very cool. :toast:

The black wing helped cover the body so the whites look very good. Wonderful timing to get the lift off and the different colored water coming off the legs. I like the overall composition and very nice detail in the larger image, well done.

Love it. Neat to have mud off one foot and water off the other. Well done.
