Hooded Angel

This sculpted formation in a remote canyon on the Colorado Plateau really caught my eye. As I watched the light change during my time here, I envisioned a figurehead on an old ship....or a 1936 Cadillac hood ornament.
Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Wonderful array of shapes and textures, John. If I had to make a suggestion it would be to darken the upper right hand corner just a little to keep the eye in the composition, I feel mine drifting up and out through that corner..not a big deal, just a personal preference I guess.

A classic, masterly composed. The blend of curved and straight lines and the balance of masses and light make this a splendid image.

Very nice indeed, John. A different look at a slot canyon or sandstone formation from our southwestern area. I like the natural erosion somewhat diagonal flow from the URHC to the LLHC. I vote that the head figure looks like a hood ornament off a 50"s era Pontiac known as the old Iron Indians.

or a sun worshiper. Love all the colors and swirls and how nicely you've focused attention on the figure head in that diagonal flow of light. Actually, I'll go with the hood ornament as well.

The color palette in just outstanding in this, John. From purple to tangerine to lemon. And, your comp is a thing of beauty unto itself. Excellent use of line, tone, and color! Fine art, Amigo! :toast:

Looks like some kind of Egyptian stone figure--i like it! The top is a bit problematic for me--theres a lack of fg/bg separation due to the lighting, it kind of gets blurred (the transition). For that reason i prefer a crop of the bottom portion, which is more interesting anyways. Nice shot, John! :wavey:
EDIT--just saw Zack's comment, needless to say i agree but i think it would be better to get rid of it rather than 'fix' it.

Excellent light and comp John. I guess I never get tired of slot canyon images when they're well done like this one!

Also, I like Stan's crop idea, But I would try Zack's suggestion first.

Very cool - awesome textures, color and contour throughout. I particularly like the framing of the figurehead in the frame. Excellent work, John!!

Fascinating to play with what I'm seeing; it's like cloud watching. Very nice, but I agree with the suggestions to reduce the impact of the urc to focus more on the interest below.

John,

Good call on the hood ornament... but I also get the impression of those ghost/angels flying around near the end of Raiders of the Lost Arc... ;-)

Beautiful design and crafting of this slot image John! I like the non-overstated color and saturation here. Now I know this is just a web version and I expect if you print this it will be top notch, but this version seems a hair soft to me and I think you could boost the micro-contrast, especially on the back wall. Maybe it's just the web sharpening I'm thinking of though. But again, I'm sure it's just this web version, compression, etc. Still love the image.

Love the texture in this shot! Thank you for sharing. I bet this would also look cool in B&W as well.

Really like how the light is gently illuminating this canyon, accentuating the forms and lines. My first impression of the 'figurehead' rock was that it reminded me of a worn ancient Egyptian statue.
