Green in the Gray

Found this yarrow plant this past September, growing in a huge driftwood log stranded at the back of a beach at Brown Point along the coast of Olympic NP. Thought the contrast of the touch of green amongst all the gray was quite nice and meaningful, and something of a gift in a year pretty much devoid of image making. Would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions you may have.

Large image attached as well.

Thanks.

The contrast between the old gray wood, intriguing in its own right, and the vibrant green yarrow is like chocolate and peanut butter. Nice combo!

Love the comp and the texture in the tree. Could maybe see lightening the green a bit.

I definitely enjoy what I like to call portraits of nature, very nice detail and composition, and the little green plant brings it to life. Beautifully seen and presented Vance.

I like this; the contrast between what was and new life. And visually what everyone else observed; you have the contrast between the fibrous structure of wood in the process of decay against the symmetry of new life; sort of a contrast involving the idea of entropy and how it is the engine for localized areas of increasing complexity; thinking of Teilhard de Chardin...

So while all of that is wonderful about it, including the off-center sort of rule-of-thirds placement of the subject plant, the one suggestion I would make would be to decrease the saturation in the leaves of that plant. The current level, at least on my monitor which is not calibrated, approaches being almost garish. And I think that is exactly the right adjective.

I think the subtle meaning of your composition would work so much better if the green were muted in the subject, even though you are playing that against an essentially B&W background. It can be toned way down it it will work so much better, IMO.

Sometimes less is more.

Wonderfully unique capture here, Vance. This old piece of driftwood has really been bleached to almost a state of white. No nits at all.

Vance, This is very nice, and a great find. Something many would walk right past. You saw it and made a piece of art. Really enjoy the contrast of the green with all the gray...all shown off so well with your comp. The detail is fantastic! Excellent...

My first impression of the comp was that it is a bit tight on the top. but the more I look at it seems to balance out.

Beautiful Vance. This would still be wonderful even without the yarrow, but with it, it's even better. Love the texture of log - great detail.

A little late to the party but this is a really unique image..the texture in the bark is very nice and the greens really make it pop. Nice eye spotting this!
