Grand Smokey Mountains

Canon S2-IS
ISO 50, 1/800 @ f4

This is the view west from Bright Angel Point on the north rim of GCNP yesterday morning. There are a number of controlled burns going on the north rim and on this particular morning it was especially heavy. I'm back in Phoenix with one of my sons today washing the smoke smell out of my clothes after a few days of camping before heading back home to Houston tomorrow. I had to use my little S2 as my trusty Sony A700 inexplicably and without warning gave me the dreaded "Camera Error" message the night before. All comments welcome. >=))>

Wonderful play of light and shadow across the cliffs and canyons. The smoke certainly gives this a misty, magical feel. I love the way your composition keeps building, one ridge at a time. Very nicely done

Yuck! A real unique take on GC, Bill. Interesting layers. I like it as is, but i also see a real cool vertical of the center portion with a little off the bottom. :wavey:

Smoke, fog, weather...They all do some magical things in the canyon regardless if they are natural or not. The smoke here really gave nice depth to the ridges. I think Stans crop suggestion is a good one, but you could still have a great horizontal one such as this. My suggestion would be to crop the far right side just before the foothills shoot up. They look a bit distorted/fuzzy. Then perhaps take a bit off the bottom. Other than that, you did a good job capturing these conditions.

At first glance I thought it was coastline & fog. The right side could use to be cropped off due to the distortion/oof.

Bill, Very nice! Quite a view and I really like the conditions you captured this in. I like it as is, but I also see the crop Bob mentioned working quite well too. Nice work Bill.

Grand thing that the canyon gives you an opportunity to record something different. This is splendid.

Love the receding layers. Thought this was along some coast somewhere at first. Very unique image of the Grand Canyon. I could see cropping a bit off the right hand side, eliminating those buttes so as to accentuate the lines of the ridges. Either way, a superb image.

Beautiful scene Bill, gotta love the fog, along with the very nice light, color and layers. Beautifully seen and presented.

I too thought this was a coastal scene. Nice job. I suspect that I will be in the minority here as no one else has mentioned it but in addition to the crops suggested I would take that sliver of clarity off the top. It must have been frustrating shooting in the smoke and the haze but you pulled it off nicely with this one.

I don't think I've seen anything quite like this from the GC.

Impressive depth given by that smoke. I really like the little strip visible in the distance.

Very nice smoke-scape, Bill. Could maybe see trimming the darker edge off the top.

The smoke sure helps separate the ridges and givea differnt view of the canyon. I agree with the previously mentioned crops off the top and right.

Welcome to Landscape Bill - this is a beauty! Love how the fog adds to this. I might crop about 50 pixels off the top to remove that strip of blue.
